It takes a considerable amount of money to run the band program. While the band department receives a certain amount of money from the school board budget, most of this money is earmarked for certain expenditures which must be paid each year, such as band music and drill and maintenance on instruments. Please be aware though, this budgeted money is most frequently inadequate to cover the expenses for which it is allotted.

We would not have a band program without the money Band Boosters raises. The band must pay for transportation to and from every away game and band competition. Each year the Band Boosters help with band expenses, including music for field shows and concerts, transportation to all events (at a cost of over $4200 for the 2007-2008 school year), equipment bus costs, band supplies, Color Guard & Flag supplies, Junior/Senior Clinic costs, fees to enter competitions, fees for summer band camp, uniform cleaning, instrument purchases, instrument repair, and the annual dinner for graduating seniors with band director Mike Thomas. Therefore, fund raising is an important service of the Band Boosters.

Student Accounts
Each student has an account with the Band Boosters. Money that is earned through fundraising efforts goes into the account. For instance, if you sell five cases of Coke, you will receive a credit of $10. If you use the Food City or Ingles cards, you receive $2.50 for each $100 dollar card you buy. The credits in these account can be used only for band expenses such as, band camp cost and clinic fees. Any credit left in the account when a student leaves the band program may be transferred to the account of a relative of the student, placed in the Susie Ball Memorial Scholarship Fund or go back to the bands' general account.

The Band Boosters have accounts for all incoming freshman. If these students participate in the Coke Case sale they will receive credits in their account for all Cases sold. If the student later chooses not to join the band, that money earned will revert to the bands' general fund.

Please
e-mail if you have any questions about a student account.

By using the Food City and Ingles cards, I was able to send my son and daughter to camp and clinics without paying anything out of pocket. I used the cards for gasoline too, and the credits accumulated rapidly. ~Nancy LaPrise  For example, if a family purchases $400 in cards in a month, the student receives credit of $10 and the band receives $10. Over eight months, the student receives a credit for $80 and has helped the band earn $80.

Currently we have six major fund raising efforts.

1. Concession Stands (Our BIGGEST money maker)
The Band Boosters are responsible for the concession stands at every home football and basketball game. Running the stands requires many volunteers. Please sign up to help operate the concession stands at least two times for football plus two times for basketball season.

2. Scrip (The EASIEST way to earn money for your account)
If you grocery shop at either Ingles or Food City you can raise money for the band at no cost to yourself.

$100 investment = $100 groceries/gas  + $5.00 income

Ingles and Food City sell gift cards to us at a generous 5% discount. Supporters purchase these gift cards at face value. If you buy a card for $100, use it to purchase $100 groceries and/or gasoline PLUS receive $2.50 in your student's account and $2.50 goes to the band account.

If you buy gasoline at Food City you earn credits to your account very quickly. The Food City in Jefferson City, Morristown on Buffalo Trail and Strawberry Plains have gas stations. Click "Pay Inside", fill up and take your card to the person in the kiosk.

Mrs. Lisa Harris, 581-4494, has the cards and you can get them from her after school.

3. Pancake Breakfast (Everyone enjoys this - diners and workers)
Each spring, we hold a pancake breakfast. Students sell tickets and earn a portion of their sales as a credit to cover their band expenses. Students also work as hosts and waiters and to bus tables at the breakfast. Student workers receive credit by dividing the profits left after the students have been assigned their credit for ticket sales and the cost of the breakfast is covered. This is a fundraiser to help students and their families with band expenses. The band does not make a profit from this fundraiser.

4. Coke Case Sale
Our final fund raising event for this year will be a Coke case sale. Blank order forms will be available on the information podium located in the Band room. You may make additional copies of the order form as needed. Forms are also available for you to print on our "Forms" page of this website.

The cost of each case is $15.00 including tax. 20 ounce bottles, 24 in a case - that comes to less than 63 cents per bottle!

Please be sure to complete one order form for each customer, indicating the customer’s name, address, phone number and number of cases sold for each type of drink. Do NOT put a check mark next to the type of drink, please indicate the quantity on that line. Also, please be sure to fill in the student’s name at the top of each form so we can give the appropriate credit to the student’s account.

The top and bottom portions of each form should be filled out exactly the same. Once complete, tear the form at the dotted line and give the bottom half to your customer once they have paid. Return the top half of the form WITH MONEY.

NO ORDERS CAN BE ACCEPTED AFTER April 29th, 2010.

Remember, each order form MUST include payment.
We will accept cash or checks (payable to MWHS Band Boosters).

The cokes will be distributed on Saturday, May 8, from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm at the front door of West High School. All coke products MUST be picked up that day and customers MUST present the bottom half of the order form to pick up their products. Any left over cases are returned to Coke, with no refunds given. Be sure that your customers are aware they MUST pick their cokes up during the distribution period!

Students will receive $2.00 credit in their band account for each case sold. This credit can be used for band related expenses, such as band camp or band trips for which there is a fee.

DONATIONS

“Casals says music fills him with the wonder of life and the ‘incredible marvel’ of being a human. Ives says it expands his mind and challenges him to be a true individual. Bernstein says it is enriching and ennobling. To me, that sounds like a good cause for making music and the arts an integral part of every child’s education. Studying music and the arts elevates children’s education, expands students’ horizons, and teaches them to appreciate the wonder of life.”
– U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley, July 1999.

2008-2009
We have received support from many individuals and area businesses to help make this year's band program successful. We would like to take this opportunity to thank:

Sonic Drive-In
Our local Sonic Drive-In manager, Jeff Burns, has been overwhelmingly generous to our organization. We would like to thank him for sponsoring our concession stands and for donating Coupon Cards for our fundraising efforts. Please frequent his drive-ins often!

Derek Cooze, MD
Dr. Cooze donated $100 to the band program. Thank you, Dr. Cooze. Thank you to Cindy Rice, an employee of Dr. Cooze, for asking her employer to support our band program.

Food City
Food City donated $250 in Robert Lowry's name. Thank you to Food City and Robert Lowry!

Marilyn and Donald Spoon
Many, many thanks to Marilyn and Donald Spoon for purchasing new t-shirts for every band member. Doesn't the band look sharp this year?!

State Farm Foundation
The State Farm Foundation donated another $500 to the band program in Jim Pope's name. This is in recognition of Jim working over 40 volunteer hours for the band. Thank you Jim!

Wal-Mart
The past four years Wal-Mart has donated approximately $5000.

Robert Lowry applied for, and received, what they call a "Matching Grant". Wal-Mart matches up to $1000 of a fund raiser. He showed the income from the concession stands from one football game.

Wal-Mart also donated $500 from a grant they call the Volunteerism grant. If you volunteer 25 hours within the prior six months they will give $250. You could get this twice a year.

Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo gave a cash donation of over $400 in Marilyn Spoon's name. Thank you to Marilyn for giving of her time and money so that Wells Fargo would give a matching grant.

Anonymous
Thank you to our donors who choose not to be recognized. We have received $2000 this year from our friends.

As you can see, many individuals have asked their employers to support the band program. We have request forms available for anyone who would like to turn one in to their employer or a local business. Please contact the Band Boosters if you or your company or organization are able to help out the band program.

Please remember to patronize the area businesses to thank them for their generosity.
